The S-350 CD/DVD Player is a modular design featuring reference caliber CD playback as well as an
optional state-of-the-art video engine that provides stunning 1080p performance and video
processing controls. The base model, the S-350a establishes a new high standard of performance and
value among high-end compact disc players. For home theater systems, the S-350a can be equipped
with a sophisticated 1080p video stage resulting in the S-350av.

The CD

Incorporating an advanced TEAC slot load disc transport mechanism (compatible with CD-DA, CDROM,
DVD-Video, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW), premium digital circuitry,
Class A analog circuitry, Krell designed anti-jitter master clock, and sophisticated high-linearity power
supply, the S-350a delivers performance unequaled by many more expensive players. It is the ideal
CD player for the serious music lover.
Matched Burr-Brown DSD 1793 24-bit, 192 kHz digital-to-analog converters for each channel
provide fully balanced operation with exceptional reproduction quality. The analog stage features
Krell Current Mode, discrete Class A, direct coupled, fully complementary circuitry.
A coaxial and toslink digital input extends the S-350cd’s digital to analog conversion circuitry to two
additional audio sources. 12VDC trigger input/output ports enable connections for remote power
on/off. An RC-5 interface is provided for remote control system integration. A metal handheld
remote control is included.

The CD/DVD

The open architecture of the S-350a allows for the addition of a sophisticated video circuit stage that
creates a new DVD player model: S-350av.
Optimized for the latest solid-state video display technologies including LED, LCD, DLP, and DILA,
the S-350av includes a full complement of outputs. Video outputs include HDMI with resolution up
to 1080p, Component with a maximum resolution of 1080i, as well as composite and S-Video
outputs.
The crucial final stage that delivers the video signal to the display device comprises professional-grade
circuitry. It is classic Krell output stage technology applied to the video domain-robust,
uncompromising circuitry delivering the most vivid and detailed picture available for the DVD
platform.

Engineered to maximize performance from today’s large format flat panel and front projectors, the
Evolution 555 offers home entertainment enthusiasts unprecedented levels of performance, flexibility
and upgradeability.

“Our new Blu-ray player will continue the Krell tradition of defining the ultimate standard for a product category,” said Bill McKiegan, Vice President of U.S. Sales and Marketing. “A ground-up Krell design, the new player will feature reference level audio and video performance coupled to renowned Krell build quality.”

Beginning with acclaimed 12-bit Sigma Designs VXP technology, this superior engine delivers the world’s highest quality video processing algorithms for noise reduction, de-interlacing, scaling, image enhancement and frame rate conversion. The Evolution 555 includes extensive aspect ratio control including a vertical stretch feature for systems employing 2.35:1 Constant Image Height display systems. Vertical stretch eliminates the black bars at the top and bottom of the image without adding distortion, or artifacts. It is most beneficial for those users of Cinema Scope screens and projectors with anamorphic lenses, as the processing is done in the digital domain.

In addition to its ultimate quality video, Evolution 555 is a Profile 2.0 Ready (BD Live) Blu-ray/DVD player with 1GB of onboard memory. An SD card slot allows for expanded memory for BD Live and Bonus View movie titles, as well as playback options for photos and music files. For the highest level of connectivity to the world of exciting current-day as well as future entertainment enhancements, the Evolution 555 features an onboard Ethernet port that allows for Internet connectivity, firmware updates, BD Live interactivity and IP control. Additionally, an 802.11b/g/n wireless card can be added to perform the same functions. This network capability also provides access to online streaming and media files resident on a home network.

Upgradeable to HDMI 1.4

The Evolution 555 is fully HDMI 1.3 compliant but with a direct fix on the future, the Evolution 555 includes an upgrade path to the future that makes it quite literally the most advanced and “future-ready” source component. Already equipped with an HDMI 1.4 transmitter, the Sigma Designs VXP video processor is located on a plug-in card for in-field upgrade to HDMI 1.4 with full support for 3D and 4Kx2K Resolution Support.

For the ultimate in audio performance, the Evolution 555 features the ESS Technology 32-bit Sabre Reference DACs connected to Krell differential Krell Evolution CAST analog circuitry. Balanced outputs and single ended outputs are also included for use with conventional preamplifiers.

Here are a few points of interest.

* The “e” stands for enhanced.

* More precisely balanced current sharing among the seven sets of Active Cascode Quartets that make up the output stage.

*An intense upgrade to the power supply includes a new separate toroidal transformer for the digital control circuitry, improved EMI suppression of high frequency artifacts, and a substantial increase in capacitive power supply reserve.

*A new green mode reduces the standby power draw dramatically. An example, using the 402 / 402e.  Stand by power draw drops from 370W to 2W — a reduction of 99.5%. The new standby mode is user selectable and turns off all non critical circuitry.

At the show, Krell had an event for selected members of the audiophile press to show off the next generation of Evolution Amplifiers, the Evolution e Series.  They set up an a/b comparison of a standard Evolution 402 versus the new Evolution 402e. It was clear to all that the new Evolution e amplifiers have taken an already potent design and elevated it to a new level.

Andrew Robinson, reviewer for HomeTheaterReview.com remarked, “My award for best sound of the show has to go to Krell and their updated Evolution line of amplifiers.
